How Sweet it is! Cake Trends for 2011!
Cake. Sweet, moist, delicious, original and delectable cake. Who doesn’t love it? And let’s face it; the wedding cake is one of the most-anticipated yummies of a wedding! And next to the bride and groom, the cake is the centerpiece of the reception.
More and more brides are on the look out for designs, inspirations, trends and styles to help their cake stand out from the crowd. So what’s in style for cakes this year? Let’s go take a look at some of the hot trends dominating the cake pans this year!
Black and White
Always a classic, white has been typically the most-used color of cakes, symbolizing purity. But taking that white one step further by introducing black has been very popular during the last few years in wedding cake design. Black and white really makes an elegant statement and when used with bold patterning, makes a cake stand out!
Buttercream!
That’s right. Leave the fondant for another special occasion; this year’s trend is buttercream. And let’s face it; while fondant may look exquisite, nothing beats the taste of a great buttercream! And if you find a seasoned and experienced cake designer with a great eye and hand for buttercream application, you can still get that porcelain-like look using buttercream.
Cakes with accents from nature
Nature is an endless source of creativity for any designer and cake designers are no exception. This year’s hot cake trend is using bits of nature added into the cake’s design. Some wedding cakes are even showing up as complete sculptures made to look like trees or mountains!
Towering Cakes!
That’s right. TOWERING cakes will be a big hit this year. And we aren’t talking about 5 or 6 regular tiers, we are talking about at least 8 tiers, be they real or fake, to get that towering height!
Flavorful and exciting fillings!
Want a wedding cake flavor that will keep your guests talking long after your wedding day? How about the very dramatic Red Velvet that not only looks striking but tastes sinfully delicious? Or what about savory almond, almond amaretto, chocolate ganache or heavenly Nutella? Or, wow! Caramel butterscotch? Having a summer wedding? What better flavor combination than orange and cream for a delicious orange creamsicle cake? And try combining different flavors for each tier. For example, a 4-tier cake can have up to 4 different flavors. When you have your venue slice up your cake, give each guest a piece of each flavor, with a little card with the flavor titles on them! What a great way to take care of the wedding cake and a dessert bar full of wonderful flavors!
Dessert and Cake Table
Love to offer a bountiful selection? Brides may want to opt for a smaller cake and offer a wonderful selection of other desserts such as cookies, tarts, cupcakes, pies, puddings, custards, fresh fruit tarts….anything beautiful and sweet! Offering a dessert table is a wonderful way to have a wide variety that will please even the most discerning of sweet tooths and the bride!
One single dramatic flower
One of the most interesting trends in cake design this year is the use of one, big beautiful flower instead of the multi-waterfall of flowers that were so popular in the last few years. Using one beautifully detailed flower (or a few) will make
Unbalanced Tiers
Have a little fun and show off your Alice in Wonderland cake-inspired design by using different sized tiers and different shaped tiers! Anything goes so long as the cake stays upright! Think about missing ovals with hexagons or bottom that is twice as tall as a top tier.
